Racing Thoughts

Racing Thoughts

“My mind is racing… It’s overwhelming and I cannot deal with it.”

How many times have you noticed telling yourself, “My mind is racing.” It may appear to be true, but in reality, it is not. See if you can take a moment and see if you can think of two things at exactly the same moment in time. For example, think of a pen and a mouse at the exact same moment in time. Can you? If you are honest, you will find you cannot. Your thought process must say the word pen and mouse alternatively. Since it is happening alternatively it cannot be at the same time. You cannot have a “penmouse,” it only and always must be a pen…mouse. Therefore, you cannot have two thoughts at the exact same moment in time. Now, try turning off your thought process completely. Can you do that? Again, if you are honest, you will find that the thought process does not turn off completely. Even if you realize that you have no thought, it takes a thought to realize you have no thought. Therefore, you cannot have zero thought. The reason thoughts appear to race is simply because they are coming in one at a time, changing topics rapidly, or expounding on the previous thought. You cannot not nor have you ever had two thoughts at the exact same moment in time. You have only had one thought. Always. One thought at a time.

Now take a moment to realize there is only thought. Not thoughts. One thought at a time appearing to be multiple thoughts at once because of the changing content.

Next, Lets slow things down a bit. Yes, you have thought, but there is space between one thought and the next. Take time and simply allow yourself to experience the space between thoughts. It might be challenging or at least be for a very brief moment at first, but allow yourself to focus on the space between one thought and the next. Notice what that space feels like. Next try to notice the space between the words of a thought. Again, allow your attention to rest in the space between the words of the thought. Spend time in that space.

While you are in the space ask yourself the following questions and focus on what your experience is of that moment:

Is the space I am experiencing alive or dead?

Does this space have a beginning? Does it have an end?

Does this space need or require anything to be exactly what it already is? Does it need anything to complete it, to allow it to be what it is?

Does this space have a name? Does it need one to be exactly what it is?

Does this space have a gender identity?

Does this space need a religious doctrine or a philosophy for it to be as it already is?

Does this space need to control anyone or anything, does it need approval from anyone, or can it be harmed or hurt in any way?

Does this space have a “problem” that needs to be remedied in this moment?  From this space does anything need to be fixed or changed?

Spend time every day as often as you can allowing yourself to experience this space. You will begin to notice thoughts arise and fall within this space. This space is not disturbed by what it sees or thinks or perceives. This is the key to discovering the true essence of who you are. Notice how it feels when you believe yourself to be the thought, or the feelings and sensations you experience on an ongoing basis, versus simply observing them from this space. Over time you will see a difference in how you experience your thoughts emotions and sensations that will make a profound difference in your life. You need not believe me, but what have you got to lose by trying this simple idea. Do yourself a favor and give this a try. You may not notice anything at first, but see what happens over time. You will thank yourself for this.
